OKTOBERFEST, DUTCH-STYLE
If you need a quick idea for dinner tonight, consider a taste of the Netherlands.
The University of Hawaii is hosting guest chef Michel van Eijk, who plans a Dutch Oktoberfest dinner, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Manoa Campus Center.
Van Eijk’s visit is part of the Global Chef series, which brings international cuisines to facilities that employ Sodexo food services.
On the menu: Dutch beef stew and red cabbage, beet carpaccio with shrimp and smoked mackerel, white asparagus soup, stuffed mushrooms with pearl barley risotto and vegetarian sausage, and butter cake with apricot filling.

Waikiki Yokocho Gourmet Alley invites you to try, at a Monster Massive Eating Contest, part of a Halloween celebration Sunday.
Cost to enter is $30. Sign up at 808ne.ws/bigeater and pick your poison: a massive portion of one dish — fried rice, karaage, ramen or sushi. Winner takes home prizes worth $250, including a $100 Yokocho gift certificate.

RUTH’S CHRIS COMES TO KAUAI
Kauai gets its first Ruth’s Chris Steak House on Monday, in The Shops at Kukui‘ula.
Ruth’s Chris was founded 52 years ago in New Orleans, serving corn-fed Midwestern beef broiled in ovens designed by founder Ruth Fertel. The menu covers steaks, seafood, lamb, pork and poultry dishes, with a wine list of more than 250 choices.
The chain has five other Hawaii locations.

TAKE A ‘BITE’ OUT OF HUNGER

Bite Squad, the restaurant delivery service, has launched a Food Love partnership, pledging to give $1 to the food bank for every order placed through Nov. 30 (use a promotional code specified when ordering to complete the donation).
