For the third consecutive week, the Big West defensive player of the week award in volleyball went to a Rainbow Wahine.
On Monday, Hawaii senior libero Savanah Kahakai picked up her first weekly award since 2015 after a combined 29 digs in last week’s sweeps of UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton. She averaged 4.83 digs per set with 10 against the Highlanders and 19 against the Titans.
The Farrington graduate has 17 double-digit dig matches this season, including 11 straight. She hit the 1,300 career digs mark at the end of Set 1 on Saturday against Fullerton and, now at 1,312, is four away from passing Tara Hittle (2004-08) for No. 4 on the program’s all-time list.
Hawaii senior middle Emily Maglio won the two previous defensive weekly honors. She was nominated this week for the overall player of the week award, which went to UC Santa Barbara’s Lindsey Ruddins.
Also on Monday, Hawaii (15-6, 9-1 Big West) dropped one place to 48 in the Ratings Percentage Index, the computer-generated system that measures a team’s strength of schedule. All of the Wahine’s losses have come against teams with higher RPIs: Utah (9), UCLA (16), BYU (17), San Diego (22), Cal Poly (26) and Marquette (34); they have one win over a team rated higher: Baylor (24).
Hawaii is at No. 23 Cal Poly (19-2, 9-0) on Friday. The Wahine have dropped nine in a row against ranked teams, a streak dating back to the 2015 NCAA tournament regional final loss against Minnesota.
