Oregon senior Alyssa Tobita, a 2014 Mililani graduate, teamed with Shweta Sangwan to win the Ducks’ first regional doubles title in program history at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Monday in Stanford, Calif.
Tobita was one set away from elimination for the second day in a row when she and her teammate rallied to beat No. 1 seed Olivia Hauger and Karla Popovic of California 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6).
“We are really proud of the way we fought and stuck together, even when we were playing from behind,” Tobita said in an Oregon press release. “We’re going to celebrate this win, but then set our focus to the (ITA Fall Nationals).”
The duo clinched a berth in the national event on Nov. 1. The rest of the Oregon women’s tennis team will close out the fall season in the Jack Kramer Invitational beginning Nov. 2 in Rolling Hills, Calif.
In the first WTA women’s doubles rankings of the season released Sept. 12, Tobita was tied for 48th in the nation with playing partner Rifanty Kahfiani. Sangwan was ranked No. 36 with playing partner Julia Eshet.
Popovic and Hauger were ranked No. 11.
The next rankings are due out Nov. 15.
