Shelby Capllonch ripped 19 kills and hustled for six digs as Damien swept Pearl City 25-12, 25-9, 25-15 in opening-round action of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball Division II State Championships on Wednesday at Kaimuki gym.
Damien (12-6), the Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up, will face Maui Interscholastic League champion Seabury Hall (14-0) at Kaimuki tonight at 7.
Pearl City (5-9), the Oahu Interscholastic Association D-II runner-up, will play Kohala in a consolation match today at Kaimuki at 3:30.
Capllonch, a 5-foot-8 junior, was one of several Monarchs on the team when they played in the state tourney a year ago.
“Experience helps a lot. You don’t feel as pressured as much. For me, I treat it as one game at a time,” she said.
Damien trailed 7-5 in the opening set when setters Hali‘amaka Gora and Ash-Lynn Herring got into a groove with their hitters. The Monarchs went on a 15-1 run to take control.
In the second set, Damien jumped to a 6-0 lead and was not challenged. Pearl City battled in the third set, cutting the lead to 15-10 after a kill and block by Emma Harada-Suaava, but Damien finished the match with a 10-5 run.
“Our girls off the bench did a great job. We’ve got to rebound from this,” Pearl City coach Bryan Camello said. “This was not what we do, or preach since day one. I want to see pride and love for each other. Every team here is great.”
Heavenly Campbell added nine kills for Damien, while Gora (14 assists) and Herring (11 assists) kept the action fast.
“We did a good job tonight running a quick tempo and making their libero work hard, moving the ball,” Damien coach Don Faumuina said. “We were pretty consistent, but I want to see it more consistent. There was one point in the second set when we slowed down.”
Rayne Pactol had a team-high seven digs and Marissa Daligcon added five for the Monarchs.
Rebecca Matapua had three kills to lead the Lady Chargers, who hit -.072. Damien hit .273.
