President Donald Trump is expected to be in Waikiki today, possibly for pau hana. City officials advise the rest of us to consider delaying any plans for Aloha Friday visits there, if possible. While the presidential motorcade rolls between Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and the tourist mecca, road closures will bring the possibility of backups of an hour or longer on stretches of the H-1 freeway.
In what may well be an over-abundance of caution, Mayor Kirk Caldwell said the city is allowing 10,000 employees the option of taking a vacation day to help reduce congestion. Let’s hope the rest of us don’t experience slowdowns in both city services and traffic.
An affordable private room for baby and me
Good news for Maui’s expectant mothers: Maui Memorial Medical Center has dropped its plan to raise the rate for a private room after delivery to $672, up from $152.
The proposal had caused an outcry on the Valley Isle, where Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has just taken over operations of Maui Health System. Nationally, a private-room price bump is not at all unusual, but families on a budget likely hadn’t counted on one.
This may not take all the discomfort out of childbirth, but it will at least ease the financial pain when baby comes home — a chance to start a college fund, perhaps.
