Green up your gift giving with Wrappily’s reversible wrapping paper, made from recyclable, compostable newsprint and soy-based inks. Wrappily founder Sara Smith of Maui said an estimated 227,000 miles of wrapping paper end up in the trash over the holidays, and many states, including Hawaii, won’t recycle gift wrap because of dyes, lamination and other additives. Her holiday prints feature penguins, elephants, plaids, snowflakes and more. Other choices include Hawaii designer Jana Lam’s chic Tropical Dreams line. Prices start at $6 for two 21.5-by-34-inch sheets, or $15 for six at wrappily.com. — Steven Mark
Eat local: It’s a worthy ambition, but not always easy. Foodland makes it easier with Eat Local Tuesdays, offering special prices on Hawaii-grown produce at its peak, with different specials each week. I scored with creamy island avocado at $1.89 a pound and eggplant at $1.99 a pound, saving about $2 a pound on each. I was also eager to try just-ripe starfruit at $5.99 per pound. (This wasn’t so highly discounted: I saved about 50 cents a pound, so it may pay to compare prices elsewhere.)
This week’s specials are Kohala grapefruit ($2.99 a pound) from Palila Growers and winter squash ($1.69 a pound) and long daikon (89 cents a pound) from Frankie’s Nursery in Waimanalo. Go to foodland.com/elt for weekly offers and to sign up for email alerts and loyalty bonuses. — Elizabeth Kieszkowski
Almost all the great soul and R&B vocalists grew up singing gospel music in church. Some made their first recordings as gospel artists before they crossed over to soul, pop or the blues; others who could have crossed over chose not to. “Jesus Rocked The Jukebox” ($22.49 for CD, $42.27 for vinyl on amazon.com) contains 40 gospel recordings from the 1950s and ’60s that were originally released on the Vee-Jay and Specialty labels. They include early recordings by the Staple Singers, a couple by the Soul Stirrers when Sam Cooke was a member, and a bonanza of long-out-of-print recordings that await discovery by gospel music lovers of today. A 20-page liner notes booklet with historic photos completes the collection. — John Berger
These color-changing LED tea lights in butterfly, dragonfly and sunflower shapes can add a touch of fun to your indoor and outdoor living spaces. The LED bulbs transition through seven color variations. The dragonfly measures about 5-1/2 inches across, the butterfly is 4 inches and the sunflower 3 inches. I plan to perch them in our backyard gazebo. I found them at the Lowe’s home improvement store in Iwilei for $2.48 each, batteries included. Info: lowes.com. — Nina Wu
