Thirty of the best female surfers will compete in the inaugural Red Bull Queen of the Bay at Waimea Bay, the holding period of which runs through Nov. 21.
The first all-woman big-wave surf competition at Waimea honors Queen Kaahumanu, the favored wife of Kamehameha I who was said to be a great wave rider. The field includes surfers from Hawaii, Australia, Brazil, Chile, France, Guatemala, Ireland, Portugal, South Africa and the U.S. mainland.
Hawaii surfers entered are Makani Adric, Paige Alms, Emily Erickson, Keala Kennelly, Remi Nealon, Kelta O’Rourke and Emilia Perry.
Chaminade sweeps Academy of Art
The Chaminade volleyball team swept Academy of Art 25-20, 25-19, 25-13 on Thursday in San Francisco.
Skyler Curry dished out 37 assists for the Silverswords (14-11, 9-8 PacWest) as Rachel Reedy had a team-high 10 kills. Bailey Soolsma led the Urban Knights (5-19, 2-15) with 10 kills.

Sara Wagenveld and Madison Ogas each had a game-high 13 kills for the Cougars (20-5, 13-4), while Evelin Solyomvari led the Vulcans (8-16, 5-12) with nine kills.

Sabrina Winslow led the Eagles (20-6, 13-4) with 14 kills. Perla Escobar and Cameryn Collie both had double-doubles for the Sharks (7-18, 5-12). Escobar had 15 kills and 12 digs, and Collie had 19 kills and 10 digs.
