Washington State defensive end Hercules Mata’afa was named the Pac-12 defensive player of the week on Monday.
The 6-foot-2, 252-pound junior tied a career high with eight tackles, with a career-high five of them for loss, three sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in a 33-25 win over Utah on Saturday.
Mata’afa, a 2014 Lahainaluna alumnus, leads the Pac-12 with 211⁄2 tackles for loss and 91⁄2 sacks.
His five tackles for loss against Utah are the second-most in a single game in school history.
The 15th-ranked Cougars have a bye this week before the Apple Cup against Washington on Nov. 25. A win over the Huskies would secure the North Division title and a berth in the Pac-12 championship game on Dec. 1 against Southern California.
Pacific (Ore.) teammates on second team
Pacific (Ore.) offensive lineman Mikey Fanning (Saint Louis ’14) and linebacker Ina Teofilo (Kamehameha-Hawaii ’14) were named to the All-Northwest Conference second team on Monday.
Fanning, a 6-foot, 275-pound senior, started all eight games at center for the Boxers after suffering a season-ending injury in the fifth game of his junior season.
Teofilo, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker, made 41 tackles this season, including a season-high 10 against Pacific Lutheran.
Boxers safety Fresno Masaniai (Kapaa ’15) earned honorable mention honors, along with Lewis & Clark freshman wide receiver Heisman Hosoda (Punahou ’17) and defensive lineman Cameron Chang (‘Iolani ’17).
4 with Hawaii ties still alive in NCAAs
Four of the 32 women’s soccer teams still alive in the NCAA tournament include players from Hawaii.
Washington State pulled off one of the biggest shockers in the opening round, upsetting No. 2 seed Central Florida 1-0 on Saturday.
Freshman Makamae Gomera Stevens (Kamehameha ’17) played 11 minutes and attempted one shot in the game. Stevens has started 11 matches for the Cougars this season and has scored one goal with two assists.
The Cougars will play Tennessee on Friday.
Vanderbilt advanced to the round of 32 with a 2-1 victory over No. 4 seed Ohio State on Friday.
Commodores goalkeeper Taiana Tolleson (Konawaena ’16) did not play against the Buckeyes, but has started six matches this year and averages 1.61 saves per game.
Vanderbilt is 3-2-1 in those six starts with two shutouts.
No. 4 seed Princeton shut out Monmouth 4-0 on Friday to advance to the next round against N.C. State.
Tigers goalkeeper Noelani Kong-Johnson (Punahou ’15) posted a shutout in her only start of the season with one save.
Baylor advanced to the second round to play Southern California with a 3-2 win over Rice on Friday. Sophomore goalkeeper Kau’inohea Taylor (Hawaii Prep ’16) has not played this season.

>> Chanelle Molina, Konawaena ’16: The Washington State sophomore guard, playing for the first time since tearing her ACL last season, had six points, three assists and two rebounds in a 91-76 loss to UC Davis on Friday and five points, two assists and a rebound in an 81-75 loss to Saint Mary’s (Calif.) on Sunday.
>> Keala Quinlan, Roosevelt ’16: The Portland sophomore guard played 13 minutes off the bench and scored six points on 3-for-7 shooting with two rebounds and an assist in a 76-47 win over Hawaii on Friday.
>> Jasmine Moody, Radford ’15: The Brigham Young junior forward had two points, four rebounds and two assists in 14 minutes off the bench of a 75-67 overtime win over Southern Utah on Friday.
>> Kizzah Maltezo, Honokaa ’16: The Concordia (Ore.) sophomore guard scored a game-high 17 points on 5-for-7 shooting with four steals and was a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range in a 64-51 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday.
>> Abby Aplaca, Punahou ’17: The Concordia (Ore.) freshman had four points and an assist in 16 minutes off the bench against Cal State Monterey Bay.

>> McKenzie Milton, Mililani ’16: The Central Florida sophomore quarterback finished 24-for-36 for 311 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 52 yards and another score in a 49-24 win over Connecticut on Saturday. The Knights are 9-0 and ranked No. 14 entering their regular-season road finale at Temple on Saturday.
>> Jordan Ta’amu, Pearl City ’15: The Ole Miss junior quarterback finished 28-for-36 for 418 yards and three touchdowns with one interception and rushed for 13 yards and two TDs in a 50-22 win over Louisiana on Saturday. Ta’amu improved to 2-1 since taking over as the starter for the Rebels (5-5), who need one win in their last two games to become bowl eligible.
>> Jordan Iosefa, Saint Louis ’16: The Southern Cal sophomore linebacker made four solo tackles in a 38-24 win over USC on Saturday to clinch the South Division title and a berth in the Pac-12 championship game.
>> Jet Toner, Punahou ’16: The Stanford sophomore kicker went 3-for-4 on field goals, hitting from 38, 32 and 31 yards and missing from 47 in a 30-22 win over Washington on Friday.
>> Fatu Sua-Godinet, Kamehameha ’16: The Delaware State sophomore receiver caught a 13-yard touchdown pass and finished with five receptions for 51 yards in a 33-30 win over Morgan State on Saturday.
>> Keoni Piceno, Leilehua ’13: The Western Oregon senior receiver caught the game-winning 16-yard touchdown pass with 7:26 remaining in a 24-21 win over Simon Fraser on Saturday to close the season. Piceno also caught a 22-yard TD pass.
>> Blaise Manabe, Radford ’16: The Western Oregon sophomore receiver caught a 5-yard touchdown pass and finished with three receptions for 24 yards against Simon Fraser.

>> Maria Leineweber, Sacred Hearts ’13: The College of Mount Saint Vincent senior led her team to the final of the Skyline Conference Championships before losing to U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in five sets. Leineweber had 15 digs, 10 kills, two solo blocks and an ace in her final match. She finishes her career second in school history with 679 total kills and ninth with 127 aces.
>> Nicole Hada, Punahou ’17: The Johns Hopkins freshman had nine digs and an ace in a four-set win over Stevenson on Saturday and nine digs in a five-set loss to Swarthmore on Sunday in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Division III tournament. Hada finished the season third on the team with 225 digs, averaging 2.18 per set.
>> Sydney Fanoga, Punahou ’14: The George Mason middle hit .250 with seven kills in a three-set loss to Dayton on Saturday in her final collegiate match.
>> Kaylen Higa, Punahou ’15: The Azusa Pacific junior setter had 17 assists and four digs in a sweep of Hawaii Hilo and 17 assists, eight digs and a kill in a three-set loss to Dixie State last week.
>> Shaylah Kagehiro, Moanalua ’15: The Azusa Pacific setter had 11 assists and five digs against the Vulcans and seven assists and four digs against Dixie State.
