Julia Boserup advanced to the quarterfinals of the Hawaii Open with an impressive 6-2, 6-3 victory Wednesday over seventh-seeded Misaki Doi at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park.
Boserup, who reached the third round of Wimbledon last year, will face third-seeded Evgeniya Rodina, a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) winner over Lesley Kerkhove, in a quarterfinal match on Friday in the WTA 125K series event presented by the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
Top-seeded Shuai Zhang rallied past Eri Hozumi 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 and will next face Vitalia Diatchenko, who held off American Jacqueline Cako, a Hawaii Open semifinalist last year, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
Both morning matches went the distance, with Croatia’s Ajla Tomljanovic rallying to beat American Danielle Lao 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 and Japan’s Miharu Imanishi making a miraculous comeback to take out American Allie Kiick 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Korea’s Su Jeong Jang overcame Amanda Anisimova, this year’s U.S. Open Junior Girls champ, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Doubles takes over today. Quarterfinals start at 10 a.m. There is no night session today.
Tecklenburg named to PacWest third team
Chaminade outside hitter Emma Tecklenburg was named to the All-Pacific West Conference volleyball third team Wednesday.
The sophomore from Plano, Texas, finished third in the conference in kills per set at 3.77 and seventh in service aces at 0.36. She also averaged 2.37 digs per set in leading the Silverswords to a 16-12 record in 2017, their third consecutive winning season.
Hawaii Pacific outside hitter Perla Escobar was also named to the third team. Cal Baptist’s Lauren Hackett was named player of the year.
HPU routs Minnesota State
The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team defeated Minnesota State 75-61 on Wednesday at the St. FrancisSchool gymnasium.
The Sharks (3-1) were led by Jessi Reeves, who had a double0-double of 19 points and 12 assists. The Mavericks (0-4) were led by Claire Ziegler’s 15 points and six boards.
