The city’s decision to extend Route 2 (Waikiki-Kalihi) to 24/7 service speaks volumes about the need for public transportation, especially in Honolulu’s tourism district. Hotel and restaurant staff get off work at all hours, and the existing late-night buses are packed, according to reports.
It’s costly — $400,000 a year to cover a two-hour gap in current service. But it’s hard to argue that there’s no need, and especially tough to make that argument to the housekeepers standing on the bus at 2 a.m.
Canceled ‘Eddie’ not swell for surfing fans
“The Eddie” is a no-go this winter, no matter how epic the waves.
The prestigious invitational contest named for legendary big-wave surfer and lifeguard Eddie Aikau, which gets underway only when sustained 30-foot waves roll into Waimea Bay, has been held nine times since its creation in 1984. North Shore pro John John Florence won the last one, held in February 2016.
Earlier this year, when the event lost its title sponsor, hope was still afloat that the annual holding period would begin this week. On Wednesday the Aikau family announced it has called off a scheduled opening ceremony, but expressed optimism that next winter will be a “go.”
