A high-surf advisory remains in effect until at least 6 p.m. today for the eastern shores of the major Hawaiian Islands.
Surf is forecast to range from 6 to 10 feet, whipped up by strong tradewinds, the National Weather Service said.
A small-craft advisory is also in effect for Hawaiian waters until 6 p.m. The channels should see northeast winds of 17 to 30 mph, with higher gusts, and seas of 7 to 11 feet, the weather service said.
The islands spent Saturday under a high wind advisory, with northeast trades of 25 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph, the agency said. That advisory was set to expire at 6 a.m. today.
Hawaii island also was under a flash-flood watch Saturday, and a winter weather advisory was in effect for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
A rainfall record was set in Hilo on Thursday, and the weather service said the ground remained saturated — a potential for flash flooding. The total, 5.14 inches, broke the record of 3.85 inches for the date set in 1968, the weather service said.
Hoomaluhia camping barred for 2 weekends
Camping in Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden will be suspended from Dec. 22 to 25 and Dec. 29 to Jan. 1, the city announced Friday.
There are three campsites within the 400-acre tropical garden; all normally allow three-day permitted camping beginning Friday afternoons and ending Monday mornings.
The other 14 campgrounds operated by the city will remain open to permitted camping unless otherwise noted. All of the Honolulu botanical gardens, Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, the Koko Head Shooting Complex and people’s open markets are closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
