Joe Gray and Daniella Moreno won the 10th annual Xterra Trail Running World Championship half-marathon titles at Kualoa Ranch in Kaaawa on Sunday.
More than 1,500 runners from 25 countries took part, climbing more than 2,000 feet around the Koolau mountain range.
Gray, who is from Colorado Springs, Colo., took the lead at the 3-mile mark and never looked back to take the tape in one hour, 18 minutes and 26 seconds, nearly one-minute ahead of Sage Canaday of Boulder, Colo.
In the women’s race, Moreno, from Santa Barbara, Calif., led from start to finish and crossed the line in 1:39:22, more than a minute ahead of runner-up Giselle Slotboom of Salt Lake City. Local favorite Polina Carlson suffered an Achilles sprain within the first mile and had to withdraw.
It’s the third Xterra world title for Gray, his second in a row, and the first for Moreno.
The top Hawaii male runner was Patrick Stover from Kailua-Kona, who finished seventh overall. Malia Crouse from Makawao, Maui, was the top Hawaii women’s finisher, in fourth place.
In addition to the main event, there were also 5K and 1oK races. Australia’s Brad White and Kaneohe’s Susie Stephen won the men’s and women’s 10K titles, with winning times of 39:09 and 43:00, respectively. The 5K went to Honolulu’s Jason Wang and Corinne Fitzgerald of New York City in 19:29 and 21:39, respectively.
