Police and fire officials are investigating a rash of house fires in Kailua that were
intentionally set over a three-and-a-half-hour period between Thursday and Friday.
The Honolulu Fire Department responded to five fires between 10:51 p.m. Thursday and 2:25 a.m. Friday.
Fire investigators determined that four were intentionally set; a fifth fire remains under investigation, according to HFD spokesman Capt. David Jenkins.
Four of the fires involved homes that were occupied at the time. However, in each case occupants were able to escape without serious injury.
HFD released details of three of the fires:
>> Just before 11:15 p.m. Thursday, five units with
18 firefighters responded to a fire at 1209 Nanialii St. When they arrived, firefighters found flames within a
detached garage, according
to spokesman Capt. Scot
Seguirant. A woman who was home at the time escaped before firefighters
arrived. No injuries were reported. Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 11:24 p.m. and extinguished it by 12:20 a.m. Friday.
>> Seven units with 26 firefighters responded to
a two-alarm fire at 629
Wanaao Road just after
11:35 p.m. Seguirant said a smoke detector alerted a family of five to the flames. Residents pulled an 82-year-old woman through a window before firefighters arrived. Emergency Medical Services responded and treated the woman for smoke inhalation and a
cut to her leg, according
to spokeswoman Shayne Enright. The fire was brought under control
by 12:29 a.m. Friday and
extinguished shortly before 12:45 a.m.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the displaced residents.
>> Four firefighters responded to a small fire at 570 Kawainui St. just after
2 a.m. Friday. Police said an unknown culprit entered the victims’ residence and set items on fire before fleeing. Five occupants who were in the home at the time discovered the fire
after they smelled smoke. Damage was estimated at $1,000.
The two other fires
occurred on Hui Street at 10:51 p.m. Thursday and Maluniu Avenue at 2:12 a.m. Friday.
