A motorcyclist has died after he was involved in a two-vehicle collision in Kunia.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has yet to release his name.
The crash occurred on Kunia Road, about a mile north of Anonui Street.
At about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, a 2015 Chevy pickup truck operated by a 37-year-old man was traveling north on Kunia Road. Police said he was making a left turn into a private dirt road, into the path of a 2014 Kawasaki motorcycle operated by a 28-year-old man traveling south.
Police said the truck and motorcycle collided and the motorcyclist was thrown onto the roadway upon impact.
He was transported in critical condition to The Queen’s Medical Center-West Oahu, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said the 28-year-old man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The truck driver and his front-seat passenger did not sustain any injuries.
This is the 45th traffic-related fatality on Oahu compared to 54 at the same time last year.
Maui teen is charged in school arson case
A 17-year-old boy has been charged with arson in connection with a fire that caused $1.2 million in damage to Kahului Elementary School.
The boy, of Kahului, was arrested and charged Friday in connection with the Nov. 24 fire. He was charged with two counts of first-degree arson, three counts of second-degree burglary, one count of second-degree attempted burglary and two counts of fourth-degree criminal property damage.
He appeared in Family Court and was sent to Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility on Oahu.
Police said the investigation is continuing.
The fire began about 9:30 p.m. at the school at 410 Hina Ave. When firefighters arrived, they found a building on fire in the middle of the campus and a portable classroom engulfed in flames closer to the Maui High School parking lot, police said.
The fire in the middle of campus also damaged an adjacent building.
Seven fire companies responded to the two-alarm blaze and extinguished it at about 12:50 a.m. Nov. 25.
Damage was estimated at $900,000 to the structure and $300,000 to the contents.
Man injured in explosion at recycling business
One person was injured Saturday in an explosion that started a fire at Campbell Industrial Park.
About 30 firefighters responded to a report of a building fire at Green Recycling, 91-080 Hanua St., at about 11:55 a.m., said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. James Todd.
Workers were apparently cutting some type of fuel tank that exploded and started the fire. An Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman said a man, 52, sustained second-degree burns and was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
The fire burned tires and other car parts that sent up a large amount of black smoke. Firefighters brought the fire under control and were wrapping up before 1:30 p.m.
