Sheriff Drammeh reaped an almost instant reward for his late-game heroics against Utah Valley on Sunday night.
The junior guard scored a career-high 20 points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 37.5 seconds left for a 70-69 victory in the back-and-forth, foul-plagued affair at the Stan Sheriff Center. He also stole the ball on the Wolverines’ last-gasp inbounds attempt with 1.6 seconds remaining.
Hours later, Drammeh was named the Big West player of the week, the first such award given to a Rainbow Warrior in 2017-18.
“Proud of Sheriff for the well-deserved honor,” UH coach Eran Ganot said. “He’s playing the best basketball of his career and on both ends. A lot can be said about his career high on the offensive end but he probably played the best defensive game of his career. A lot to build off.”
It was the first time the Swede — who hit a personal-best four 3-pointers — was recognized by the Big West in his three-year UH career.
UH could not make Drammeh available for comment on Monday because of a new Big West student-athlete off-day interview policy.
However, Drammeh was active on social media.
“(It) is easy when the 1-2 punch set u up for every shot!” Drammeh tweeted at point guard Brocke Stepteau, who’d congratulated him for his award.
Drammeh’s go-ahead 3 came off a kick-out assist from Stepteau, who tied his career high in dimes with seven.
UH (7-2) has won three straight games heading into Friday’s matchup against No. 6 Miami in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic opening round. It is the third straight year UH faces an opponent ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press poll.
