While the plans won’t be realized in time for the current holiday season, the business being planned for the former Sports Authority site on Ward Avenue would seem to fill a needed niche.
It’s envisioned as an indoor marketplace, where small spaces, not unlike those rented for self-storage, will be available for rent by small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Ohana Hale Marketplace is set to open in May, after renovations by the owners, Chris Ulu of StorKeeper Self Storage and a partner. They have signed a 10-year lease — more than enough time to decide if the concept is a winner.
Last chance for (legal) fireworks
Unless New Year’s revelers on Oahu make tracks to a satellite city hall by the end of today, they won’t be making much noise on Dec. 31 — at least not legally. The regional sites have been issuing fireworks permits during business hours, and today is the deadline.
Once that document is in hand, permit-holders will need to resist the urge to light up until the sanctioned period, 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve until 1 a.m.
Other than that, safety and silence will be golden. There will be enough noise in 2018. It’s an election year.
