Hawaii island police have identified a body found along the Kalapana coastline on Dec. 5 as 61-year-old Michael Clay Hughes.
A hiker discovered Hughes’ body in a remote location along the shore. Firefighters recovered the body the following day, and police investigators discovered an area in the nearby brush where there were items bearing Hughes’ name.
An autopsy was performed and no foul play is suspected. The exact cause of death has been deferred pending the results of toxicology tests.
Hughes did not have a permanent address.

2 men sought in home invasion in Puna
Hawaii island police are looking for two men in connection with a violent home invasion in Puna on Monday evening.
According to police, a 34-year-old resident of the Leilani Estates subdivision heard voices and saw the headlights of a vehicle in his driveway. He went outside to investigate and was attacked by two unidentified men who struck him in the face and head.
One of the attackers chased the resident back into the house and continued to assault him in the dining room. The two suspects fled in a red Honda sedan without taking anything from the residence.
The victim suffered two skull fractures and cuts to his head and face. He was transported to Hilo Medical Center.
Both suspects wore bandanas covering their nose and mouth. One wore the hood of a sweatshirt over his head; the other wore a baseball cap.
The case is being investigated as a first-degree burglary.
