Two-time Sony Open in Hawaii champion Jimmy Walker is one of five pros participating in the 2018 Hawaii Tourism Pro-Junior Skills Challenge.
The three-hole exhibition pairs five of Hawaii State Junior Golf Association’s best with five PGA Tour pros here for the Sony Open in Hawaii, the year’s first full-field event.
It will be played at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 9, at Waialae Country Club. Admission is free.
Walker won at Waialae in 2014 and defended in 2015, winning by a tournament-record nine shots. He also captured the 2016 PGA Championship and won the Pro-Junior that year with then-Punahou senior Kyle Suppa.
Tony Finau, who turned pro at 17, is also playing along with Web.com Tour graduates Zecheng “Marty” Dou —the first Chinese-born player to win on Web.com and earn a PGA Tour card — and three-time NCAA All-American Ollie Schniederjans. The fifth player will be announced.
Juniors in the field are `Iolani senior Kamie Hamada, who is headed for New Mexico, and Kaiser senior Malia Nam (USC), who will play for the third time. The boys are Punahou senior Evan Kawai (San Diego), along with Mid-Pacific Institute sophomore Davis Lee and Kamehameha junior Pono Yanagi.
Hamada and Lee are the 2017 HSJGA players of the year in the oldest age divisions. The awards were announced after the Michelle Wie HSJGA Tournament of Champions earlier this month.
Other players of the year are Kate Nakaoka and Bryce Toledo-Lue (7-10), Teal Matsueda and Joshua Chung (11-12) and Lana Calibuso-Kwee and Jake Sequin (13-14).
