Honolulu’s first traffic fatality of 2018 involved a motorcycle crash on Mailiilii Road in Waianae on Tuesday night that killed a 57-year-old Waianae rider who was speeding and not wearing a helmet, investigators said.
He was identified Wednesday by a relative as Peter Peralta.
Police said the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet while riding “at a high rate of speed” on Mailiilii Road just north of Paakea Road before the 11:45 p.m. crash. Investigators did not immediately know whether alcohol was involved.
The rider lost control, rode onto a grass shoulder then hit “a fixed object” before crashing into a chain-link fence, police said. He was thrown onto the road, where he died.
At the same time last year, Honolulu had no traffic fatalities.
In mid-December, the state Department of Transportation reported that
Hawaii had 101 traffic
fatalities for the year compared to 112 at the same time in 2016.
As usual, Oahu had the greatest number of fatalities — 44 — followed by Hawaii island with 35.
Statewide, the majority of 2017’s traffic deaths —
59 — involved motor vehicle occupants. There were also 16 motorcycle fatalities and 12 pedestrian deaths.
