Law enforcement authorities launched an investigation Saturday after a body was discovered near the reef runway at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
The body was found about 12:15 p.m. after state Department of Transportation crews were alerted to an object on the runway. No other details were immediately available.
The reef runway was closed during the initial investigation but opened just after 6 p.m., the department said by email. Airport operations continued on the other three runways.
Crewman rescued from tanker off Oahu
Coast Guard air crews on Saturday medevaced a 31-year-old crewman from the tanker Barcelona Knutsen 13 miles south of Oahu.
The request for the medevac came at 7 p.m. Thursday after the man injured his face while working on a fire extinguisher, the Coast Guard said by email. The vessel was about 575 miles south of Hawaii island at the time.
At 8:27 a.m., an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Barbers Point hoisted the crewman aboard and delivered him in stable condition to Emergency Medical Services personnel at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
Injured hiker rescued off Lanikai trail
Fire rescue crews on Saturday aided an injured hiker on the Lanikai Pillbox Trail.
The call came in just after 1 p.m.
The Honolulu Fire Department responded with 16 firefighters from five units, including the Air 1 helicopter.
A man in his 20s had injured his ankle while coming down the trail, which can be steep. Crews hiked up the trail and found the man at 1:25 p.m., the department said by email.
Air 1 inserted two crewmen, who loaded the man in a Stokes litter. He was then airlifted to the landing zone at Lanikai Community Park and transferred to Emergency Medical Services personnel by 1:48 p.m.
