Kaiser Permanente Hawaii announced Thursday it will give two local nonprofits $55,000 in community benefit grants to support school-based health programs. The grants support Kaiser Permanente’s mission of total health by funding programs that improve the mental, physical and social well-being of Hawaii’s residents.
One of the recipients is Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, which will receive $35,000 to improve access to adolescent, school-based health services in Waianae with school-based health centers at Waianae High School and Waianae Intermediate School.
The other recipient is the American Diabetes Association, which will get $20,000 to support the ongoing implementation of Act 214 in Hawaii, which authorizes Department of Education employees to volunteer and assist students with diabetes testing, insulin administration and glucagon administration in emergencies.

Police investigating theft of firearms in Puna
Hawaii County police are investigating the theft of numerous firearms taken between Sunday evening and Monday afternoon during a break-in at a Puna home.
Among the weapons taken were pistols, rifles and shotguns.
The theft occurred sometime before 6 p.m. Monday, when police responded to the report of a break-in at the 15-1600 block on 29th Avenue in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision.
Police said an older man driving an early-model pickup truck and towing a trailer with a lawn mower was seen in the area Monday afternoon. Detectives want to identify and interview the man.
