A 25-year-old Kihei man has turned himself in to police in connection with a fatal hit-and run that occurred at a McDonald’s parking lot on Maui.
Police said the suspect turned himself in at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and was arrested on suspicion of accidents involving death or serious bodily injury.
He was released pending further investigation.
Shortly before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said, a Honda Civic sedan struck a pedestrian at the fast-food restaurant parking lot at 1214 S. Kihei Road.
The pedestrian, who was identified as Robert Mercier, 57, of no local address, was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The 25-year-old man suspected of driving the sedan at the time of the crash fled the scene on foot with his passengers.
About four hours later the driver turned himself in to police.
Skateboarder badly hurt after hit by car
Emergency crews transported a juvenile male to a hospital after he was struck by a vehicle in Wailuku.
Just before 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, police said, the boy was riding his skateboard down a residential driveway on Maka Hou Loop when he was struck by a white 2016 Nissan Leaf operated by a 44-year-old Wailuku woman.
The vehicle was traveling south on the roadway when it struck the skateboarder. Police said he was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
