The search will continue today for a woman swept away by the Wailuku River in Hilo.

On Friday, the woman was hiking with a man above Piihonua Falls when they were both swept away by quickly rising floodwaters, firefighters said.

The man made it to the riverbank, but lost contact with the woman.

Firefighters responded at about 6:15 p.m., but could not search in the water and instead searched along the riverbank from Piihonua Bridge to Boiling Pots. Firefighters said the search was called off due to darkness at 7:25 p.m.

Crews on Saturday also failed to find the woman, who is in her mid-20s.

Injured hiker rescued from Aina Haina trail

Honolulu firefighters rescued an injured hiker from a trail in Aina Haina on Saturday afternoon.

Responding to a 3:38 p.m. emergency call, the Honolulu Fire Department dispatched five units staffed with 15 personnel to the mountainside near the intersection of Hind Iuka Drive and Lawelawe Street.

Firefighters could hear the man calling for help and hiked to his location, making contact with him at 4:37 p.m.

The man, who suffered unspecified, but non-life-threatening injuries, was airlifted to a landing zone established at Nehu Park and transferred to the care of Emergency Medical Services.
