The Hawaii Hilo baseball team dropped both games of a home doubleheader to Augustana to begin its season.
The Vikings came out swinging in the first game, routing the Vulcans 15-4 at Wong Stadium. Augustana had 19 hits total, with leadoff hitter Riley Johnson going 6-for-6 at the plate, scoring four runs.
The Vikings (2-0) rallied late to take the second game 4-3. The Vulcans (0-2) held a 3-0 lead heading into the eighth inning, but Augustana tied it heading into the ninth and scored the deciding run on an error by third baseman RJ Romo.
Hawaii Hilo starter Kyle Alcorn struck out seven in 4 2/3 shutout innings. Saint Louis alum John Kea took the loss after allowing the winning run. Zach Reeg earned the win for the Vikings, striking out five in two shutout innings.
>> The UHH softball team opened its season with a 15-1 rout over San Francisco State in Las Vegas. The Vulcans had 11 hits as a team, led by Maria Steadmon’s game-high three hits and four RBIs. Moanalua alum Cyanne Fernandez pitched a complete game, giving up just three hits to go with two strikeouts and no walks.
