2 are killed after being hit while standing in roadway
A man and woman died in South Kona on Friday after they were hit by a car while standing on a highway near a macadamia nut field, Hawaii island police said.
Police identified the woman as 54-year-old Roxane Cho of Kailua-Kona; the man had not been identified.
Hawaii police Sgt. Bradley Freitas said the crash happened about 8:15 p.m. on Highway 11 near the 84-mile marker. The two victims, who Freitas said were “for some reason standing out in the middle of the roadway,” were struck by a southbound Nissan sedan driven by a 55-year-old Ocean View woman. The driver and her passenger were not hurt.
The two deaths are Hawaii County’s first traffic fatalities of the year compared to four a year ago.
