A 60-year-old woman who died after she was found unresponsive at Hanauma Bay has been identified as Jeongyeon Lee of South Korea.
Lee’s death was classified as an accidental drowning, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office.
At about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, lifeguards rescued a snorkeler later identified as Lee after she was found unresponsive in the water. Lifeguards performed CPR until Emergency Medical Services arrived and transported her in critical condition to a hospital, where she died.
Lee was snorkeling with a two-piece snorkel and mask.
Teen is charged with assault at restaurant
A 16-year-old boy has been charged after he allegedly assaulted another teen at a fast-food restaurant in Ewa Beach.
The teen was charged with third-degree assault.
Campbell High School sent a letter to parents Friday to inform them of the assault, which involved students who were harassed by the suspect.
Police and Campbell High said that at about 4 p.m. Thursday, the students were at the fast-food restaurant when the male suspect approached them and asked for money.
When one of the students, 16, told the suspect to stop bothering them and leave, the suspect pulled out a gun and struck the victim, causing injury.
Police said the suspect then fled the scene.
Shortly before 8:10 a.m. Friday, police located the suspect and arrested him on suspicion of second-degree assault.
Man, 82, escapes fire in Waipahu apartment
An 82-year-old man escaped a fire that broke out Monday in his apartment in Waipahu.
Shortly after 9:20 a.m., firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire at the two-bedroom apartment at Kunia Terrace, a three-story residential building at 94-049 Waipahu St.
Resident Dionisio Impelido Sr. said he was sleeping on his living room couch when he woke up to flames coming from his adult son’s bedroom.
Impelido managed to escape his apartment without injury. Impelido lives in the apartment with his girlfriend and son. His girlfriend was not home at the time of the fire and his son was outside of the unit when the fire broke out.
When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming from the apartment’s rear window.
Neighbors grabbed a hose from one of the building’s fire hose cabinets and sprayed water at the apartment to help reduce the spread of the blaze before firefighters arrived.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Scot Seguirant said firefighters brought the fire under control shortly after 9:30 a.m. and extinguished it at 9:46 a.m.
