What a tough job these temporary gigs can be. Brig. Gen. Moses Kaoiwi, interim head of the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, has said that he has no plans to apply for the permanent post.
There’s a lot of work for Kaoiwi, regardless, tasked with the mission of restoring trust in the agency responsible for the notorious false missile alert of Jan. 13. That distrust ranges from wary citizens’ shake of the head, to death threats. Still, the interim chief said he’ll wait for findings and an initial “action plan” from Brig. Gen. Kenneth Hara, deputy adjutant general, before making changes. Let that report come, and the work begin, soon.
Mayor sticks to his guns with World Surfing League
Mayor Kirk Caldwell certainly laid down the law with the World Surfing League, rejecting its request to change the dates it sought for two coming North Shore events. The league missed the deadline to amend the application, and that’s it.
The mayor has taken criticism — in this paper, and on other fronts — for earlier decisions to bend the rules. The 2016 Pro Bowl gala at Queen’s Beach, at which liquor was allowed, has been mentioned a time or two.
Still, this time securing the dates at the desirable North Shore is a competitive process, so there’s a fairness issue.
Bad break, dudes. But there will be another year.
