Kauai’s spice sister duo — creators of Salty Wahine and Aunty Lilikoi Passion Fruit Products — have won another slew of awards for their sauces and seasonings at the 2018 Fiery Food Challenge in Irving, Texas, last month.
The Fiery Food contest rates products from across the U.S. and internationally in over 85 categories. Professional judges evaluate hundreds of sauces, salsas and other spicy treats at the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas.
Owned by Laura Cristobal Andersland, Salty Wahine products won awards in cook-off competitions in which the spices were used in dishes:
>> Hawaiian Rub: first-place for dry seasoning or rub for fowl; third place for dry seasoning or rub for fruits and vegetables
>> Island Volcano Seasoning: second place, best new product; and third for dry seasoning or rub for fowl
>> Island Curry: third place for soup/stew mix
A sixth award came from a separate contest in Texas in January, the Zest Fest: the People’s Preference Award for Spice/Rub for Island Volcano.
Andersland’s sister, Lori A. Cardenas, who has also won numerous medals for her Aunty Lilikoi line, won three awards in the Fiery Food Challenge, including first place in the Condiments: Mustard category for her Passion Fruit Wasabi Mustard; second place in the BBQ Sauce category for a mustard-based sauce; and second place in the Condiments/Salad Dressing category for her Passion Fruit Wasabi Dressing.
The sisters earlier were featured in Crave for their wins in September’s International Scovie Awards in New Mexico. Visit 808ne.ws/spicesisters.
