Hawaii Pacific is third in the West Region in the first regional rankings announced by the NCAA Division II women’s basketball committee Wednesday, the same day the Sharks recorded their 18th straight victory.
The No. 23 Sharks are 22-2, 16-1 in PacWest play. Azusa Pacific, which HPU defeated 73-69 earlier this season, is the top team in the West Region. The two teams have a rematch on Feb. 22 at Moanalua High School.
On Wednesday, HPU extended its program-record winning streak with a 76-62 win over Notre Dame de Namur at Gleason Gym in Belmont, Calif.
Alysha Marcucci led HPU with a career-high 21 points and Samantha Lambrigtsen added 19. Marissa Caballero led Notre Dame de Namur (10-16, 7-11) with 19 points.
>> Jonathan Janssen scored 18 points, leading the HPU men’s basketball team to a 71-57 win over Notre Dame de Namur at Gleason Gym. The Sharks improved to 14-11 overall and 9-8 in the PacWest, and the Argonauts fell to 5-18 and 4-14.
Melounova earns Big West tennis honor
Hawaii’s Petra Melounova was named the Big West women’s tennis athlete of the week. This is the third such honor for Melounova, a sophomore from Havlickuv Brod, Czech Republic.
Melounova went 4-0 combined in her singles and doubles matches this past week against San Diego and Long Beach State.
Hawaii swimmers set 2 records
The University of Hawaii swimming team opened the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships with a pair of records in Los Angeles.
The women lead the standings by two points over UC Santa Barbara, buoyed by a MPSF-record time in the 800 freestyle relay. The UH team of Bryndis Hansen, Silvija Djelic, Phoebe Hines and Franziska Weidner completed the event in 7:07.30, shattering the school and MPSF records by over seven seconds. The women’s team also earned a silver medal in the 200 medley relay.
On the men’s side, the team of Metin Aydin, Olli Kokko, Mateusz Chaba and Reed Wynn finished second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:26.20, beating the program record by five-hundredths of a second.
