Much is foggy about the recent Punahou School student-expulsion settlement: Documents have been sealed. They concern a 6-year-old whose father allegedly sexually abused another child at a sleepover. What happens after the boy finishes out this term — also unknown.
School admissions is something normally handled as a contract, and courts don’t often intervene. A public school, which largely must take all district children, would have fewer options.
But parents, whether of public or private school students, had better stay in the loop on their child’s environment. That’s the broader lesson here.

The “smart garage” unveiled at Ward Village is sure to help drivers waste less time as they troll around for spaces: Red or green lights signal the availability of an open stall. Something similar is working for Ala Moana Center parking, too.
Of course, parking is sure to be tight in a community designed to be “walkable.” There may not be as much space as there might have been in an earlier era. A digital counter and flashing lights won’t change that.
At some point when there are better transit options, the really smart thing to do would be leaving the car at home.
