Kamehameha Schools assistant band director James Maeda had sex on the Kapalama campus with a 14-year-old student over an eight-month period, Deputy Prosecutor Ayla Weiss told a state judge Thursday after an Oahu grand jury returned an indictment charging Maeda with multiple counts of sexual assault.
Circuit Judge Colette Garibaldi confirmed Maeda’s bail at $450,000.
Maeda, 23, is free after having already posted bail. He appeared in Honolulu District Court with his lawyer Richard Sing Thursday morning. Both declined comment.
Police arrested Maeda Feb. 16 on nine counts of first-degree sexual assault and one of third-degree sexual assault. He remained in the Honolulu Police Department’s main headquarters cellblock over the weekend until he was able to make arrangements with a bail bondsman on Monday.
Weiss told Garibaldi that Maeda committed the sex assaults from June last year to earlier this month, and that the majority of the assaults happened at the school. She said the rest happened at Maeda’s home. During that time the girl turned 15.
Kapalama campus Head of School Taran Chun sent a letter to parents Saturday informing them that he “recently learned of an inappropriate relationship between a faculty member and one of our students.” The letter did not identify Maeda or the student.
Chun’s letter also told parents that after he received information pertaining to the allegation, the faculty member was immediately placed on “indefinite administrative leave.”
