Now that Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium’s face lift is complete, showing off the renovated facility is part of the fun for Hawaii coach Bob Coolen.
The debut of its new-look ballpark fostered a festive vibe prior to UH’s home opener on Wednesday. At the end of the night, No. 15 California celebrated a 5-0 win in the first game on the freshly installed turf.
Even so, the night remained a memorable one for the Wahine program.
“With all the dignitaries here and all the people who had a hand in making this what it is, it’s a big deal,” Coolen said. “(Longtime Cal coach Diane Ninemire) said, ‘you’ve done a really nice job with getting this to be an excellent playing facility.’ That was really nice for her to say.”
Opening night for the new field — with artificial turf in the outfield and surrounding the renovated dirt infield — began with a pregame ceremony to commemorate the occasion. After Sen. Brian Taniguchi, who was instrumental in securing the funding for the $3.4 million project, threw out the first pitch (albeit overhand), the pitchers controlled the action through the first four innings.
The Golden Bears (16-1) broke through with four runs in the top of the fifth in support of starter and Kamehameha graduate Kamalani Dung to steal the show in the first game of the Texaco Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.
“It was really nerve-wracking,” Dung said. “I didn’t think I would be that nervous but when I heard the fans cheer so loud when they called my name I got butterflies and I got flashbacks to when I used to play in this stadium.
“It was crazy tonight. … Everyone was relentless.”
In her first appearance at RWSS since the 2015 state tournament, Dung held UH to three hits, struck out five and walked one over 41⁄3 innings while improving to 8-0 in her first season with the Bears after transferring from Fresno State.
Dung and UH senior Dana Thomsen matched zeros through four innings before Cal shortstop Jazmyn Jackson drilled a two-run double to left center with two outs in the top of the fifth. Mikayla Coelho followed with a two-run homer to center to give the Bears a 4-0 lead.
Zoe Conley, who started her college career at Cal State Northridge, threw the final 22⁄3 innings to earn the save.
Thomsen (3-4) struck out three and walked two in five innings. Brittany Hitchcock gave up a run in the sixth and freshman Dominique Martinez finished the game for UH.
The field renovation began June 30 and the field was cleared for practice on Jan. 16. Along with the new turf — with the “H” logo embedded into center field — protective netting was extended down the length of the grandstands and padding installed on the outfield fence of the stadium, which was also given a fresh coat of paint.
The five-day tournament continues with three more games today. UH faces Longwood at 6 p.m.
