The Rainbow Wahine would be wise not to leave their season up to the basketball gods.
Win two games in this week’s final homestand, and Hawaii is into the Big West tournament, no questions asked. Lose against UC Santa Barbara today and Cal Poly on Saturday’s senior night? Well …
Backing into the tournament as the 8 seed is a possibility, but so is missing it entirely for the first time in program history.
“Win. We need to win these two,” coach Laura Beeman said. “We need to get momentum going into the tournament.”

The best-case scenario for UH (11-16, 4-10 BWC) is the 6 seed, meaning it will have to play on the first day at Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday no matter what — assuming the Wahine make the tourney. And right now, assumptions are dangerous. Long Beach State looked to be the clear last-place team just a couple of weeks ago, and has won three straight, including an 85-80 overtime win over UH at the Pyramid on Saturday to pull into a tie for seventh.
Now, Fullerton (3-11) is the odd team out, looking to surpass the Wahine.
If Fullerton were to win at third-place UC Irvine on Saturday (or spring a massive upset against regular-season champ UC Davis today), UH would need to win a game to stay ahead of CSUF, which would own the tiebreaker. Making things interesting, Irvine has been without its star, guard Morgan Green, during its three-game losing streak.
“There’s too many ifs, ifs and ifs,” Beeman said.
Guard Sarah Toeaina, the team’s only senior, has her game face on (and no longer needs a protective mask) for the final two home games of her career.
“We’re always telling ourselves we’re going to go 2-0, and whether we come up short, we’re going to keep working as hard as we can,” Toeaina said. “We understand what’s at stake with these two games, and what’s at stake if another team in our conference has another two wins or two losses, and how that places us.
“We’re not going to take any team for granted. We know that any given night any given team can win.”
UCSB (12-15, 9-6) has won four of five. The Gauchos feature forward Drew Edelman (16.2 ppg), who scored a season-high 27 in a 71-61 win over UH at the Thunderdome on Feb. 3. The Gauchos also have a familiar face on the sideline in Alex Delanian, Beeman’s former top assistant who left last offseason.
Toeaina had consecutive double-doubles in last week’s road trip split at Cal State Northridge and LBSU. She passed Ayesha Brooks for 14th in Wahine career scoring on the trip; Ashleigh Karaitiana is 26 points away at 1,167.
Two other Wahine are moving up charts. Point guard Tia Kanoa has 137 assists, good for fourth in a UH single season. She is 24 away from matching Melanie Azama’s record total and is tied with BJ Itoman for the top assist average (5.1) in a season.
Wing Lahni Salanoa has 44 3-pointers, ninth for a UH season with room to move up; Megan Tinnin has the record of 55.
Huff named All-Pac 12
Former Rainbow Wahine standout Megan Huff, now a forward at Utah, was named to the 15-player All-Pac 12 team this week.
Huff, who transferred out of Manoa after UH’s Big West championship season of 2015-16, redshirted last season then put up team highs of 14.5 points and 7.9 rebounds this year, while shooting 50.7 percent from the field.
As a UH sophomore, she earned Big West Sixth Player of the Year and was a second-team All-BWC selection.
