A 72-year-old man died Sunday after he was struck by a van while attempting to cross Fort Weaver Road.
According to an Emergency Medical Services report, the man was running from The Queen’s Medical Center-West toward a bus stop when he was struck at about 1:30 a.m.
Police said the man was not in a crosswalk. He was hit by a van traveling north on Fort Weaver Road operated by a 61-year-old man.
The pedestrian was transported in critical condition to the hospital, where he later died.
Police said excessive speed and alcohol were not factors in the incident.
This was the 11th traffic-related fatality of the year on Oahu, compared with six at the same time last year.
Maui man knocked into ocean by wave dies
A 56-year-old Napili man died Sunday after he was knocked into the ocean by a wave while picking opihi at D.T. Fleming Beach Park in Honolua.
According to a Maui Fire Department release, the man was picking opihi with a male relative when he was knocked into the ocean around 11:51 a.m. A witness called for help after the relative unsuccessfully tried to rescue then man, who was treading water.
Lifeguards later spotted the man floating unresponsive in the water about 150 feet from shore and a half-mile west of Windmills beach.
Firefighters and lifeguards brought the man back to shore and began CPR and advanced lifesaving measures, but he could not be revived and was declared dead at the scene.
Utah man critical after Maui rescue attempt
A 54-year-old visitor from Sandy, Utah, was in critical condition Sunday after attempting to rescue another man who had fallen off a cliff and into the ocean at Makaluapuna Point.
According to the Maui Fire Department, the victim and a 28-year-old family member were standing on the cliff in the area known as Dragon’s Teeth when the younger man fell into the water and had difficult getting back out.
The older jumped into the water to help but at some point became unresponsive.
The younger man was eventually able to make it back to the rocky cliff area. Lifeguards responding to the 11:48 a.m. emergency call retrieved both men and performed CPR on the older man until he regained a pulse.
Both were transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, the 28-year-old man in stable condition.
