The city will permanently relocate its Monday People’s Open Market from Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park to the Magic Island parking lot at Ala Moana Regional Park.
Due to positive feedback from both customers and vendors, the city said it has decided to permanently relocate the market, which had temporarily been moved to the Magic Island parking lots from 10 to 11 a.m. Mondays since January due to maintenance work at Mother Waldron.
Many homeless also had been setting up camp at Mother Waldron after being swept out of Kakaako Waterfront Park and adjacent parks in December, as previously reported in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
The city Department of Parks and Recreation, however, said the market already was slated for permanent relocation due to the planned incorporation of a portion of Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park into the future Pohukaina Elementary School. The decision to permanently relocate the open market ahead of schedule was based on the popularity of the new Ala Moana site, as well as increased vendor participation.

Kauai County sues for public beach access on north shore
Kauai County has filed suit against landowner KAPHA North Shore LLC to reopen a public beach access to the eastern end of Kauapea Beach, also known as Secret Beach.
The suit was filed Wednesday after county discussions with KAPHA LLC’s Hawaii representative in early 2017 failed to resolve the dispute.
A demand for a jury trial and summons was filed Friday in Circuit Court by county attorney Adam P. Roversi.
The property in question is a roughly 21-acre portion of the Kilauea Gardens subdivision on a bluff overlooking Kauapea Beach near Kilauea Lighthouse.
As a condition of subdivision approval, and of Special Management Area permitting required for the development of the Kilauea Gardens subdivision, the developer was required to provide a pedestrian access easement from the public road to the shoreline across the land currently owned by KAPHA LLC.
