University of Hawaii junior Johan Sandell qualified for the NCAA swimming and diving championships in his second event with a second-place finish in the men’s 1-meter diving competition at the NCAA Zone E qualifying meet on Tuesday in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Sandell’s total of 676.95 earned him an NCAA berth in the event after qualifying in 3-meter on Monday. He will attempt to qualify in platform diving today. The NCAA championships are set for March 21-24 in Minneapolis.
UH senior Madison Sthamann placed 11th in women’s 3-meter. Sthamann, senior Mariah Renteria and freshman Ivy Houser will also attempt to qualify on platform today.
Chaminade softball outlasts Azusa Pacific
Kaiser alum Rainelle Matsuoka’s 11th-inning single scored Kayla Henmi to give Chaminade a 10-9 walk-off win over Azusa Pacific at Central Oahu Regional Park on Tuesday night.
Madelyn Stockslager earned the win for the Silverswords (4-10, 1-6 PacWest), striking out nine in eight innings of relief. The freshman gave up two runs, four hits and a walk. Amanda Woods led the Cougars (4-12, 0-5) with three hits and three RBIs.
