Classmates in high school at Kamehameha, California’s Kamalani Dung and Loyola Marymount’s Codie Paiva put on a show in their return home over the past week.
Dung, a transfer from Fresno State during the offseason, went first last Wednesday, tossing 41⁄3 shutout innings to earn her eighth victory in a 5-0 softball win over Hawaii. She allowed one walk and three hits while striking out five.
It only got better the next day for the junior right-hander.
The 2015 Kamehameha alumna tossed her first perfect game in a 4-0 victory over UTEP. She struck out 12 of the 21 batters she faced to become the first Cal pitcher with a perfect game since 2010.
“It was awesome to throw my first perfect game at home in front of my friends, family and the Cal fans,” Dung said in a press release. “I knew I was going for a perfect game in the last inning and refused to walk the second batter I faced. I made sure that if my perfect game was being ruined, the girl I was facing would’ve hit to earn it.”
Dung allowed her first two runs as a starter against East Carolina, but managed to give up just five hits and one walk with five strikeouts in a 6-4 victory over the Pirates on Saturday.
Cal (18-3) finished 3-2 in five games at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Dung was named the tournament’s most valuable pitcher and is 10-0 in 11 starts this year with a 1.51 ERA in 601⁄3 innings. She has struck out 75 and opponents are hitting .182 against her.
Across the street at Les Murakami Stadium, just hours after Dung’s perfect game against UTEP, Paiva dominated the Hawaii baseball team in a 3-0 victory.
The 6-foot-5 junior right-hander needed just 86 pitches to complete a four-hit shutout of the Rainbow Warriors to notch the second win of the season in nine games for the Lions.
Paiva threw 64 pitches for strikes and allowed only one walk with four strikeouts. He retired 15 of the last 17 batters he faced and allowed only one runner to reach second base after the fourth inning.
The outing was only the fourth start of Paiva’s three-year career at LMU. In his only start as a freshman two years ago, Paiva allowed just two runs in six innings with seven strikeouts to earn the win against Hawaii.
On Monday, Paiva was named the West Coast Conference pitcher of the week for his performance.
“Being away from home and having this type of crowd is amazing,” Paiva told the Star-Advertiser’s Stephen Tsai after Thursday’s win. “They were with me all night.”
Labasan is top pitcher in GNAC
Western Washington junior Shearyna Labasan was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference pitcher of the week in softball on Monday.
The 2015 Maryknoll alumna went 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA in two starts over the weekend, allowing five earned runs in 14 innings to earn two complete-game victories.
Labasan, who also went 4-for-10 at the plate in the series with a double, three walks and two runs scored, lost a perfect game with two outs in the sixth inning in her second start against Northwest Nazarene on Saturday.
Labasan ranks third in wins, sixth in innings pitched and strikeouts and ninth in ERA in the conference. She’s 4-3 with a 4.07 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 43 innings.
The Vikings have won six of their past eight entering doubleheaders this weekend at home against Western Oregon on Saturday and Concordia on Sunday.
