Jennifer Iseri’s first career home run highlighted the University of Hawaii softball team’s 9-0 rout of East Carolina on the opening day of the Outrigger Resorts Hawaii Spring Fling Tournament on Wednesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
UH sophomore Callee Heen went 3-for-3 with two doubles and Iseri, a junior left fielder, capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the fourth inning. The offensive explosion made for a short night for UH senior Dana Thomsen, who allowed six hits, struck out three and walked one in the five-inning victory over the Pirates (6-15).
The Rainbow Wahine (11-8) have won five of their last six and face BYU (9-12) tonight at 6:30.
UH’s Sthamann wins NCAA diving qualifier
University of Hawaii senior Madison Sthamann finished first in platform diving at the NCAA Zone E qualifying meet in Flagstaff, Ariz., earning berths in two events at the upcoming NCAA swimming and diving championships in the process.
Sthamann was fourth after the preliminaries and finished atop the standings after the finals with a score of 590.00 to win the platform event for the fourth time this season. Her finish also earned her a spot in the 3-meter event at the NCAA women’s championships set for March 14-17 in Columbus, Ohio.
UH junior Johan Sandell qualified for his third event at the NCAA men’s championships with a fifth-place finish on platform. He earlier qualified in 1- and 3-meter.
Sandell will be joined in Minneapolis for the NCAA meet by swimmers Metin Aydin and Olli Kokko, who were officially invited on Wednesday. Aydin qualified in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke and the 200 individual medley. Kokko will compete in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Hawaii Pacific splits doubleheader
The Hawaii Pacific softball team split a doubleheader with Concordia Irvine on Wednesday at Howard Okita Field.
Concordia Irvine was lifted by Callie Nunes’ stellar outing in the first matchup, a 4-0 win for the Eagles (10-6, 3-3 PacWest). She struck out 10 and walked none, allowing just one hit in six innings. The Sharks (6-4, 3-3) responded in the second game with a 5-2 win. Leilehua alumna Tiana Cantero-Kawelo and Mary Dungey both had two hits and two RBIs for HPU.
