Longwood’s Jordan Clark hit a leadoff home run in the first inning, Jessica Smith added a two-run shot in the fourth and the Lancers held off the University of Hawaii softball team’s comeback bid in a 4-2 win on Friday in the Outrigger Resorts Hawaii Spring Fling Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
UH sophomore Callee Heen answered Clark’s homer with a solo blast in the bottom of the second inning. Longwood reclaimed the lead on Kasey Carr’s RBI single in the fourth followed by Smith’s homer to left.
UH’s Nicole Lopez homered in the bottom of the seventh and UH brought the tying run to the plate with one out. But Sydney Gay got a strikeout and a fielder’s choice grounder to close out a complete-game victory. UH senior Dana Thomsen (6-6) gave up five hits, struck out five and walked one over four innings in the loss. Freshman Emily Klee threw three innings of scoreless relief.
The Rainbow Wahine (11-10) face James Madison today at 4 p.m. and close the tournament Sunday against Arkansas Pine Bluff at 11 a.m.
Cal Baptist crushes Hawaii Pacific
Cal Baptist’s John Glenn drove in five runs and scored twice, leading the Lancers to a dominating 18-2 win over the Hawaii Pacific baseball team at Hans L’Orange Field on Friday.
HPU (9-8, 3-6 PacWest) racked up 11 hits, but were unable to translate them into runs against the Lancers (12-3, 5-0)
