Hawaii surfers took home numerous awards from the World Surf League’s gala honoring achievements in Australia on Thursday.
Carissa Moore of Honolulu won recognition in several categories, including “Heat of the Year” for going up against American surfer Lake Peterson in the quarterfinal at Trestles. She shared “Move of the Year” honors with John John Florence of Oahu’s North Shore.
Spokeswoman Lauren Rolland said athletes in the WSL Hawaii/Tahiti Nui region took home more awards than any other region.
The North Shore’s Finn McGill took the title of WSL Junior Champion, while Honolua Blomfield was named Longboard Champion. The WSL Big Wave Tour Champion titles were swept by Paige Alms and Billy Kemper, both of Hawaii. Florence was also WSL Men’s Champion.
“Accepting this trophy for the second year in a row is so special to me,” Florence said in a news release. “Last year, I really learned to step back and enjoy everything — the wins, the losses, just everything that we go through on tour — and it really made it a fun year.”
The WSL Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast are scheduled to begin today in Australia.
