A 48-year-old Haiku man was killed Friday after he was hit by an SUV while walking on Hana Highway in Haiku, Maui police said.
Police identified the man as Myves Manu Gould.
The driver of a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe was heading west-bound near Haiku Road when he struck Gould at about 8:50 p.m., police said. Gould died at the scene. He was wearing dark-colored clothing and had been walking in the middle of the lane, located in a rural area with no street lighting.
The driver, a 35-year-old Washington man, and his three passengers were not hurt.
It was the second traffic fatality the year on Maui, compared to one at this time last year.
Motorcyclist is Oahu’s 14th traffic fatality
Speed was a contributing factor in the death of a 21-year-old Kaneohe man who crashed his motorcycle on the H-3 Freeway in Kaneohe Friday night, according to police.
The man was heading toward Kaneohe when he lost control just past the Likelike offramp, veered onto the shoulder area and hit a guard rail, police said. He was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene.
The man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, which occurred at about 11:45 p.m.
He is the 14th traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared to eight at this time last year.
Possible grenades lead to street closing
Police closed Kalakaua Avenue this morning after someone brought in two apparent explosive devices to the Waikiki police substation.
Police said the devices resembled grenades.
The substation and surrounding area were evacuated shortly before 9 a.m., and the police bomb squad picked up the devices.
The road was reopened before 10 a.m. No one was hurt. No further details were available.
2 injured in house fire ignited by gas stove
Fire investigators said a gas stove that was inadvertently turned on ignited a fire that damaged a two-story home Saturday in Kalihi.
The Honolulu Fire Department dispatched 10 units staffed with 39 personnel to the Maliu Street residence after receiving a 7:05 a.m. emergency call.
The fire, which was contained to the kitchen, was brought under control by 7:28 a.m. and extinguished by 7:39 a.m.
Two men and a woman at home when the fire broke out were alerted by a smoke detector. One of the men was treated for burns to his face and arms and transported for further care, according to an Emergency Medical Services report. The woman was treated for an injury at the site and refused transport.
Damage was estimated at $2,000 to the structure and its contents.
HFD officials are reminding the public not to store items on stove tops and to make sure they have a working smoke detector.
