Excessive speed and alcohol were factors in a motorcycle crash Sunday morning that killed a 31-year-old Honolulu man on Moanalua Freeway, police said.
At about 1:45 a.m. the man was riding a motorcycle Ewa-bound when he lost control along a curve in the freeway before the Red Hill offramp, veered onto the shoulder lane and struck a guardrail, police said. He was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.
Police said it was the 15th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared with eight at this time last year.
SUV smashes into stump, ejecting 2
Maui police say a 20-year-old Haiku woman was critically injured in a one-vehicle crash in Makawao early Sunday morning.
They said the woman was one of two passengers ejected from the back seat of a SUV that crashed into a tree stump on the side of Olinda Road just north of the Hanamu Road intersection.
The SUV was traveling south on Olinda Road when the driver failed to negotiate a right curve in the roadway and lost control of the vehicle, police said. The SUV left the roadway, hit the tree stump and rolled over onto its side.
All of the occupants of the SUV went by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Police said none of the rear seat passengers was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Man held in fatal blade attack on Maui
Maui police arrested a suspect Sunday in a fatal stabbing or slashing at a Kahului shopping center.
Police said they received a report of a stabbing at Queen Kaahumanu Center at about 3:15 p.m. Sunday. Witnesses told officers a male suspect had fled the area.
As the officers were checking the shopping center and surrounding streets, police said bystanders pointed out the suspect at Kahului Community Park nearby. The officers took the suspect into custody and transported him to the Wailuku Police Station. The suspect had not been charged as of Sunday night.
The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He has yet to be identified.
Hawaii News Now reported the weapon was a machete.
8-foot shark spotted off Maili beach
City lifeguards will evaluate this morning whether they need to put up shark warning signs at Maili Beach Park.
They confirmed Sunday the sighting of an 8-foot-long shark that was not exhibiting aggressive behavior.
The species was not identified, but it could have been a juvenile tiger shark.
