As a general rule, there’s no room on a public sidewalk for conducting sales-related business. So, it’s not surprising that strolling visitors and retailers in Waikiki, as well as the Waikiki Neighborhood Board, are irritated by businesses exploiting a loophole in city law to promote merchandise and services from wheeled kiosks. Mobile kiosks aren’t illegal under current law unless they are being used to peddle products. The City Council should move quickly to pass Bill 6, which would put the brakes on these rent-free rolling operations. They’re an unnecessary sidewalk distraction and unfair competition to shops paying premium rent rates.

Hoping JABSOM’s physicians return home

The budding physicians emerging from the John A. Burns School of Medicine were on tenterhooks before learning where they’d be serving their residency on Friday. They excitedly ripped open envelopes to learn the answer to the question: Did I get my preference?

One great value of having a medical school in the state — and the reason admission so favors local students — is because Hawaii needs doctors, especially on the neighbor islands. There’s even loan repayment aid for those who work in an underserved area.

So, the rest of us have a different question: Are you coming back?
