Hawaii Hilo men’s tennis player Vaclav Slezak was named the PacWest Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday.
A junior, Slezak played at the No. 1 singles position and helped the Vulcans to five wins in six days last week on the mainland, including a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 defeat of then-No. 5 ranked Nils Hofacker from Indianapolis. Slezak is 9-1 in singles play this season and is 8-2 in doubles competition.

Sharks receive PWC women’s tennis honor
Hawaii Pacific women’s tennis player Lara Meccico received PacWest Conference Player of the Week honors on Tuesday.
The Sharks are coming off three wins last week in Las Vegas, all against Top 12 programs. A senior from Italy, Meccico won all three of her singles matches.
HPU (11-1) is ranked No. 4 in the nation, with six wins against nationally ranked opponents. The Sharks are at California Azusa Pacific on March 29 and Cal State Los Angeles on March 30.
Kinoshita’s error hurts UH Hilo on links
Hawaii Hilo’s Jared Kinoshita, the leader after two rounds of the California Baptist Lancer Men’s Golf Joust, was disqualified on Tuesday for signing an incorrect scorecard after Monday’s second round was complete.
After the error, Kinoshita had to play the final round with no chance of contending for medalist honors and his individual score was erased from UH Hilo’s team totals. Leading the way for the Vulcans was Warren Miller and Ryan Roodzant, each with a three-round tally of 230
The Vulcans tied for 18th place with a three-round total of 915. Host Cal Baptist won the event with a score of 850.
UH Hilo heads to Japan next week Monday and Tuesday before competing in the PacWest Championships, beginning on April 23 in Arizona.
