Temperatures dipped into the mid-40s on Sunday at Wheeler Beach but there was no dip in success for the third-ranked Hawaii beach volleyball team. The Rainbow Wahine (18-3) dropped just one set en route to sweeping their final two opponents at the Gamecock Challenge in Columbia, S.C.
The SandBows defeated Florida Gulf Coast and UAB by 5-0 scores to claim the tournament title, extending their winning streak to a program record-tying 13. Hawaii will seek to break that mark set in 2015 on Friday when opening up against Cal State Bakersfield (2-6) at the Big West Challenge hosted by Sacramento State.
“It was slightly colder than (Saturday) and that is always a challenge for us,” SandBows coach Jeff Hall said in a telephone call. “We did a good job taking care of business like we should.
“Sometimes you play down to the opponent but I’m proud of the girls. They were efficient.”
On Sunday, Hawaii’s pairs won nine of 10 individual contests in straight sets against the Eagles (5-6) and the Blazers (5-6). The only set lost was at Flight 2 against FGCU in the first match of the day when Laurel Weaver and Carly Kan were pushed by Katherine Puisis and Karissa Rhoades, 21-15, 19-21, 15-12.
The SandBows closed out the two-day event with their seventh and eighth 5-0 team sweeps. The last loss for Hawaii came on March 10 against then-No. 5 Florida State 4-1 at the East Meets West Challenge in Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Junior All-American Emily Maglio and senior Ka’iwi Schucht extended their winning streak to nine to improve to a team-best 18-3. Fifteen of the victories have been in straight sets, with the duo playing the past eight matches at Flight 1.
“They played super good, have found a good rhythm,” Hall said. “For some reason, today teams went after Mags (targeting Maglio on serve-receive) and she destroyed them. They picked on her and that was a mistake.”
