In making the signing of guard Eddie Stansberry official, the Hawaii basketball team hopes to inject more shooting — and winning — into its near future.
City College of San Francisco’s 6-foot-3 guard did plenty of both in his two-year junior college career. He sank more than three 3-pointers per game for the California Community College Athletic Association champions in 2017-18.
Stansberry, an All-Bay Area player out of Archbishop Riordan High just across the street from CCSF, went 62-4 in his two years with the Rams. That included a 33-1 campaign in the recently completed season, with Stansberry rising to the occasion for 21 points in the title game. He was an all-league and all-tournament selection.
Stansberry, a Bay Area native who has two years of eligibility, averaged 13.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game as a sophomore. His long-range shooting — 42.8 percent, 104 3s made — could be his biggest asset. UH (17-13, 8-8 Big West) lagged behind its peers from beyond the arc for most of last season, connecting on only 33 percent. That was eighth in the nine-team conference.
He signed at a CCSF ceremony Monday alongside future San Jose State forward Michael Steadman, becoming the fourth member of UH’s 2018 signing class, following big men Mate Colina, Owen Hulland and Dawson Carper.
“We’re extremely excited to welcome Eddie to our basketball ohana,” UH coach Eran Ganot said in a release. “Eddie’s an elite shooter, talented scorer and a fierce competitor who comes from one of the best junior college programs in California. With his work ethic, character and winning pedigree we expect him to represent Hawaii basketball at the highest level.”
UH has one more scholarship to assign to a new player or returning walk-on.
