A flash flood watch was in effect for all islands through Friday afternoon, but “Kauai is the most susceptible to flooding due to the extreme amount of rainfall that they’ve had already,” National Weather Service senior forecaster Jon Jelsema said Wednesday.
While Oahu also received heavy rain, most of that has drained and the island is not nearly as saturated as Kauai, he added.
Beginning Wednesday night, rain was expected to be potentially heavy at times. The rain should subside by the weekend.
Two weather features — remnants of “an old front sagging southward” of the islands and the same upper level disturbance that resulted in thunderstorms last weekend — will interact, potentially causing heavy rainfall and resulting flooding, Jelsema said.
Zuckerberg donation
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are donating $1 million to assist flood relief efforts on Kauai.
The donation, confirmed Wednesday by the three local organizations that will receive the funds, will be used to help those affected by severe flooding caused by recent rainfall.
The Hawaii Community Foundation will receive $250,000 of the donation, which brings its Kauai Relief and Recovery Fund to more than $500,000. The fund, which provides grants to organizations involved in immediate relief effort on Kauai, was established by a $100,000 donation by Pam and Pierre Omidyar, matched by HCF and supported by other anonymous donors.
The rest of the donation will be shared by Kauai Economic Opportunity, which administers several programs that serve seniors, low-income families and the island’s homeless population, and Kauai Habitat for Humanity.
Temporary class site
The Honolulu Waldorf High School will temporarily hold classes on the grounds of a Manoa church as contractors continue to clear mud from the Aina Haina campus in the wake of the recent storm.
Classes will be held today and Friday at the former site of the Lutheran High School of Hawaii, on the grounds of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1404 University Ave. Lutheran High shut down in 2016 due to low enrollment.
About 60 students attend Honolulu Waldorf High at 5257 Kalanianaole Highway.
