Following a world premiere in Los Angeles next week, Oahu residents will be next in line to see a new documentary about three-time world champion surfer Andy Irons when “Andy Irons: Kissed by God” screens at Hawaii Theatre on May 6.
Irons, who grew up on the north shore of Kauai, died in Texas in 2010 while traveling home after pulling out of a surf contest in Puerto Rico. While his death shocked the surfing community, some wondered if drugs played a part in his demise; when his autopsy results were officially released about six months later, they confirmed the presence of prescription drugs along with cocaine and methamphetamine.
“Kissed by God” is the result of three years of effort by directors Steve and Todd Jones to tell the heartbreaking story of Irons’ battles with mental illness and drug addiction. The film features interviews with Irons’ widow, Lyndie, as well as his brother, Bruce, and fellow pro surfers Kelly Slater, Sunny Garcia, Nathan Fletcher and Joel Parkinson.
“The time to tell Andy’s story is now, not because we want to glorify his life or accomplishments but because Andy wanted to share the truth of his struggles to educate future generations,” Bruce Irons said in a statement.
There will be two chances to see “Andy Irons: Kissed by God” on Oahu in May. The first, a charity benefit hosted by the film’s producer, Teton Gravity Research, starts at
4 p.m. May 6 along Bethel Street and in nearby Sun Yat Sen Park, where food vendors and educational displays will be complemented by the music of Jeff Rasmussen and Donavon Frankenreiter. Seating for “Kissed by God” will start at 7 p.m. inside Hawaii Theatre, with the screening at 7:30 p.m and a filmmaker Q&A to follow. Tickets are $75 for just the street fair; $100 gets you into Hawaii Theatre for the screening along with a commemorative trucker hat from the film. Go to hawaiitheatre.com/events for tickets.
“Andy Irons: Kissed by God” will also screen at Dole Cannery Stadium 18 on Oahu, Maui Mall Megaplex 12 in Kahului and Makalapa Stadium 10 on Hawaii island as part of the film’s nationwide general release on May 31. Visit fathomevents.com/events/andy-irons for tickets.
