A possible engine problem prompted an Alaska Airlines flight from Seattle to Honolulu to make an emergency landing last night at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
Alaska Airlines spokesman Daniel Chun said the an oil filter bypass light indicated a possible problem in one of two engines, prompting the flight crew to alert the airport.
“The flight crew, following procedures, idled the engine and continued for Honolulu,” the airlines stated in a release. “The other engine and all other systems were operating normally. While an emergency landing was declared, the flight landed safely.”
Chun said the flight was initially going to be re-routed to Kahului but was able to make it to its scheduled destination in Honolulu.
AA Flight 145 left Seattle at 6:51 p.m. (PT) and arrived in Honolulu around
9:50 p.m. local time. There were 157 passengers aboard.
Department of Transportation spokesman Tim Sakahara said the airport received notice of the potential problem with the flight about 45 minutes from arrival.
Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting personnel were dispatched to the runway as a precaution.
Sakahara said the flight crew contacted the airport after the plane landed to cancel the emergency notice. The plane was able to taxi to its designated gate under its own power.
No injuries were reported.
Airlines personnel will inspect the plane today to determine where there actually was a problem with the engine.
Sakahara noted that the plane, like all commercial aircraft that undertake trans-Pacific crossings, is capable of functioning with only one engine.
