Kaiser High and Highlands Intermediate schools took the top two spots in the 15th annual ‘Olelo Youth Xchange Statewide Student Video Competition.
The issues-oriented contest attracted a record
980 submissions from
100 public, charter and private schools across the state. Sony sponsors the competition, which gives students a chance to tell stories via video on a range of subjects.
The winners were honored at an awards ceremony Thursday at the Hawai‘i Convention Center.
Kaiser High won in the Expert category with a video titled “Ko Makou‘aina,” while Highlands Intermediate took the Junior Expert category with “Behind the Orphan.” Each school was awarded a professional-grade Sony HD video camera worth nearly $2,000.
The 42 winners in three age divisions and various categories, ranging from minidocumentaries to public service announcements, received high-definition Sony digital video cameras worth $650 each. The age divisions are elementary, intermediate and high school. Previous winners and students with professional experience compete in the Expert and Junior Expert categories.
Along with Sony, other sponsors include Aloha United Way, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Na Leo TV, First Hawaiian Bank, Hawaiian Electric Co. and Ko Olina Resort and Marina.
